Sound Checklist Mixer

Week Before  

  • Set the Date, Invite the people
  • Develop Setlist 
  • Make a sound check playlist  (Spotify/ YouTube /OneDrive)  
  • Develop a stage plot with name, instrument  vocal, input number.  

 Before the Soundcheck  (plan 1 hour)

  • Rugs Chairs, Water, Wine  opener, food table Heater Hepa filter
  • Power equipment.  Mixer and speakers use same plug
  • Label mixing console 
  • Confirm all mixer channel settings.  If in doubt turn Down 
  • Musicians   Tune Up & Plug in cables
  • Floor monitors close to musicians. 
  • Fishman for Mains   adjust settings Boses turn up Bass 
  • Power up equipment in proper order; power Speakers  last.
  • Play Music. A familiar song  from Computer to test sound  Get help to hear recorded music.  
  • NOTE: Computer controls output volume USB channel. Line MU
  • Set Headphones levels with dial.  PFL needed for headphones
  • Hang up Sound Dampeners 
  • Safety check on stage; walking paths clear of cables Tape  down

 

Soundcheck  

  • Musicians settle down & tune up. Help  YOURSELF first.  (3 mins each) 
  • Gain for each channel. Between 12 – 2 o’clock Leave headroom   Fader at zero (UNITY) and increase gain to meter level   
  • Get the Meter set CORRECTLY for each channel 
  •  PRACTICE setting Gain   this is the hard part
  • Once gain is set…leave it alone.
  • Start Main Fader at UNITY  for live music Or start all the way down  (test)
  • Send Master for the AUX monitors Listen to monitors with Band    
  • Compressor  Bruce vocal turn to 12:00  or 2:00
  • EQ – 15 sec max /channel  Leave if you don’t know how
  • Blend and contrast channels; backing singers blend, lead guitar stands out over rhythm, etc. Add in effects as needed. This is advanced stuff.  
  • Strap on Guitar to move around and hear mix
  • Use aux setting to turn down guitars in monitors  so you only hear vocals set so I can hear
  • Make mix adjustments if appropriate.  

 

After the Sound Check  

    • Play Warm up song  
    • Walk room to listen w/Headphones
    • Check with musicians for gear or  monitor levels problems. 
    • Check recording levels with headphones
  • Relax, you’ve got everything ready  Take a moment to sit back.

TIPS etc

  • IF you set up Group 1 for Vocals.. That manages the recording levels.  Monitors levels  do not effect/control the recording levels . listen to recording levels on headphones.  Group setting can bring vocals up or down.  
  • Test Pan left and right for Group  vocal left guitar right pan. 
  • Computer  USB in with PFL   
  • Try DELAY in FX
  • Gain  rule 12 2 vocals   10-12 instruments 
  • Get  wireless Mouse computer // vs touch screen? 
  • Group channels ½  ¾ for easy volume control (Learn this).  
  • USB  push down button.  Can’t see in Computer?  Restart Mixer unplug and replug USB  so see the LIne MU input. .
  • Feedback?  too much Highs on EQ
  • HPF  if you have HOT signal   gain turn down and still too high 
  •  PAD leave in all the time  unless you have bass or a drum ad pad or HPF  to reduce low RUMBLE of Bruce guitar. 
  • Check microphone placement   45 degrees

Hiss?  Feedback?

  • Hiss, turn down computer input in Sound setting control Panel
  • Feedback? Turn down the EQ  Highs   Move  mic behind speakers
